“I called a local transmission shop who said they didn’t do the type of work I needed done on my clutch. After looking around at a few shops and reading reviews, I found Turbo Lab who said they could do it. These guys …”
Kevin M., Google review

The car hesitates before it shifts. Or it slips, clunks into gear, or makes a whine that gets louder with speed. Transmission trouble is scary because the bills can be big, and it's hard to tell a small fix from a big one.

Turbo Lab does transmission repair in Orem on manual and automatic cars and trucks. We find out what's really wrong first. A lot of the time, it's something smaller than a new transmission.

Is your transmission slipping or shifting hard?

Have it checked soon if you notice:

  • Slipping: the engine revs, but the car doesn't pick up speed
  • Late, harsh, or clunky shifts
  • A shudder at low speed, like driving over rumble strips
  • Whining, humming, or grinding that changes with speed
  • Red or brown fluid under the car
  • A burning smell, or a check engine light with a shift problem

Clutch Replacement

On a manual car, most drivability trouble is the clutch. We do clutch replacement for stock and performance cars, and we check the hydraulics first, since a bad master or slave cylinder can feel just like a worn clutch and costs a lot less.

Automatic transmission service and repair

Old, burnt fluid causes a lot of shifting problems. A fluid service with the right fluid for your transmission can fix rough shifts caught early. When it's more than fluid, we check for solenoid, valve body, and torque converter problems, and read the codes the transmission stores. We don't rebuild transmissions. If yours needs one, we tell you straight and help you choose the next step.

Manual transmission repair

Grinding into a gear, popping out of gear, or a noisy gearbox usually means worn synchros, bearings, or linkage. We diagnose it and tell you what it needs. We don't rebuild gearboxes, so if it's worn out inside, we say so and help you choose the next step. Performance cars that make more power than stock can wear gearboxes faster, and we see a lot of those.

Differential and driveline repair

A clunk when you shift into drive, a vibration at speed, or a clicking noise when you turn can come from the driveline, not the transmission. We check and repair CV axles, U-joints, driveshafts, and differentials, including the center differential on all-wheel-drive cars like Subarus.

Towing and heat: transmission wear in Orem

Heat is the enemy of a transmission. Towing a boat to Utah Lake or Deer Creek in July, or a trailer up Provo Canyon, makes the fluid run hot and wear out faster. So does stop-and-go traffic on I-15. If you tow, your transmission fluid likely needs changing more often than the normal schedule says.

We see many all-wheel-drive cars here because of Utah winters. On those, tire sizes that don't match can strain the driveline, so we check that too.

Tested before we quote a transmission

We test before we quote, so you don't pay for a new transmission when a sensor or a fluid service will do. You get the price in writing before we start. And we've fixed cars on Center Street since 1999. Our work is covered by our warranty.

Transmission repair questions

How much does transmission repair cost?

Diagnosis is $175. A fluid service or a repair depends a lot on the car and the parts, so we quote it in writing after we test it.

Do I need a new transmission?

Not always. Many shifting problems come from old fluid, a sensor, a solenoid, or the clutch. We test first and tell you the smallest fix that will work.

How often should I change transmission fluid?

We usually suggest every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. It depends on the car and how you drive. If you tow, drive in heavy traffic, or drive up canyons often, stay toward the low end.

Can I keep driving with a slipping transmission?

It's best not to. Slipping makes heat, and heat causes more damage. Driving on it can turn a repair into a replacement.

Do you work on CVT transmissions?

Yes, we service CVTs, including fluid service. We don't rebuild them. If one needs more than service, we tell you straight.
