How it works: we plan the build with you, install and tune it on our dyno, and you leave with the dyno sheet.
You want more power than your stock engine can take. Or the engine already let go from boost, and you don't want that again. Stock pistons, rods, and bearings are made for stock power. Push them past that, and something breaks.
Turbo Lab does performance engine builds in Orem. We plan the build with you, build it with stronger parts, and tune it on our AWD Dynojet.

“I have a 2013 wrx that had a blown engine Adam was great to work with going over options of what to do to get this car back on the road. We ended up doing a built motor with full bolt ons and fp green turbo. All I can …”

When you need a performance engine build
The cheapest time to make an engine stronger is when it's coming apart anyway. A performance engine build makes sense when:
- You plan to add a turbo or supercharger, or turn up the boost
- You want to rev higher than the stock parts can safely go
- The engine failed from boost, heat, or high RPM
- The engine needs a rebuild anyway, and you want it stronger
- Your build gets pushed hard, on canyon roads or at track days
Our performance engine build process
It starts with a plan: what you want the car to do, what fuel you'll run, and what you want to spend. Your goal also decides what else has to change, like the clutch, transmission, fuel system, and cooling.
Then we build it. For boost, that usually means forged pistons and rods, which are much stronger than stock cast parts. For high RPM, the valve springs, valvetrain, and oiling matter more. We measure every clearance and put it together to spec. Machine work on the block and heads goes to a machine shop with CNC and precision equipment.
Break-in comes next. New piston rings need to seat against the cylinder walls, and that takes 500 careful miles on the road. After that, we tune the engine at full power on our AWD Dynojet, watching air-fuel, timing, and knock under load.
Performance engine build cost in Orem
The price depends on the engine, your power goal, and the parts it takes to get there. Forged parts cost more than stock ones. Machine work, fuel parts, a bigger turbo, and a stronger clutch all add up. That's why we plan it with you first. You get a written quote that matches your goal and budget.
The build and the tune, planned together
We build engines and we tune them, in the same shop, so the build and the tune are planned together. We've built engines on Center Street since 1999, from daily drivers to full builds. If your engine only needs to be put back to stock, see our engine rebuild page. Adding boost to the new engine? See turbo kit installation and supercharger installation.

Performance engine build questions
What are forged internals?
Forged parts are made from metal pressed into shape under huge force. They're much stronger than cast parts, which are made by pouring melted metal into a mold. That strength lets an engine take more boost or more RPM.
Do I need a built engine to add a turbo?
Not always. Many stock engines can handle a mild turbo setup. Big boost goals usually need forged parts. We tell you where the safe line is for your engine.
How much does a performance engine build cost?
It depends on the engine, the power goal, and the parts. Parts and machine work vary a lot from build to build, so we plan it with you and quote it in writing first.
How long does a performance engine build take?
It depends on parts and machine work. Parts can take time to arrive, and the block and heads go to a machine shop. We give you a time with your quote.
Can I drive a built engine every day?
Yes, if it's planned for the street. A daily driver build uses parts that work well cold and in traffic. A pure race engine may not be happy on an I-15 commute.
How do I break in a new engine?
Run conventional oil for the first 250 miles. Then change the oil and filter, again with conventional oil. After another 250 miles, change the oil and filter and switch to synthetic. For those 500 miles, drive gently, vary the load, don't idle for long, and stay off wide open throttle. Then the car is ready for a full power dyno tune.
