Your Subaru is leaking oil, or it's losing coolant and you can't find where it goes. Or it's time for a timing belt, and the dealer quote made you sit down. Or you drive a WRX and want it faster.

Turbo Lab does Subaru repair in Orem, from head gaskets to full engine builds. Subarus are everywhere in Utah because of the snow, and we see them every week.

When you need Subaru repair

Subarus have a few well-known weak spots. Bring yours in if you notice:

  • Oil drips under the engine, or a burning oil smell
  • Coolant going down with no leak you can see
  • The engine running hot, or the heat blowing cold
  • Your timing belt mileage coming up on an older model
  • A shudder, whine, or hesitation from the CVT
  • A binding feeling or noise when you turn tight in a parking lot

Subaru head gaskets and oil leaks

Older Subarus with the EJ25 engine are known for head gasket leaks. It often starts as a small outside leak of oil or coolant. Left alone, it can lead to overheating and a bigger repair. We check the gaskets, find the leak, and fix it right, so you're not back a year later.

A head gasket job can be done the same day. But we recommend sending the heads to a machine shop to be checked and made flat while they're off. That adds a few days, and it's the choice we'd make on our own car. It's up to you.

Subaru engines lie flat, with the cylinders on each side. That shape makes valve cover gaskets, cam seals, and oil pan seals common leak spots. Some early FB engines were also known to burn oil. We tell you which leaks need fixing now and which can wait.

Subaru timing belts

Older Subarus with EJ engines use a timing belt. Most newer Subaru engines use a timing chain. If your car has a belt, it needs to be replaced on schedule, because many of these engines can be damaged if the belt breaks. We do timing belt replacement with the water pump, tensioner, and idlers at the same time, and it's often done the same day.

Subaru CVT and AWD service

Most newer Subarus use a CVT, a transmission with no set gears. Its fluid wears out like any other fluid. We service CVTs and other transmissions. Most need fresh fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the car and how you drive. We don't rebuild transmissions.

Subaru all-wheel drive works best when all four tires match. If one tire is a different size or much more worn, the AWD system has to work against itself. That can damage the center differential. So if you replace one tire, the other three need to match it in size and wear. We check the tires, the differentials, and the fluids that keep the system healthy.

Subaru WRX and STI performance

The WRX and STI are some of the most tuned cars in Utah. They're also all-wheel drive, so a two-wheel dyno can't test them the way you drive them. Our AWD Dynojet runs all four wheels. We do custom dyno tuning for your parts and for our altitude.

WRX and STI engines are known for piston and rod bearing failures, most of all when they're pushed hard on a bad tune. If yours is knocking or low on compression, we can do an engine rebuild and make it stronger while it's apart.

Subaru repair cost in Orem

The price depends on the model, the engine, and the job. Head gaskets on a boxer engine take more labor than on many other cars, because of how the engine sits. A timing belt job costs more when the water pump and seals are done at the same time, but it saves labor later. You get a written quote before we start.

Subaru repair questions

Do you work on Subarus?

Yes. Turbo WRXs and STIs are the cars we see most, and we fix everyday Subarus too, from head gaskets to AWD systems.

Does my Subaru need head gaskets?

Older EJ25 engines are known for head gasket leaks. Signs include oil or coolant leaks, losing coolant, and running hot. We check it and tell you if it needs work now.

Does my Subaru have a timing belt or a chain?

Older Subarus with EJ engines use a belt. Most newer engines use a chain. Call with your year and model and we'll tell you.

Why do all four tires need to match on a Subaru?

The AWD system expects all four wheels to turn at the same speed. A tire that's a different size or much more worn makes the system strain, which can damage the center differential.

Can you tune my WRX or STI?

Yes. We tune on our AWD Dynojet, which runs all four wheels, and write the tune for your parts and our altitude.

How much does Subaru head gasket repair cost?

It depends on the model, what else is leaking, and whether the heads go to a machine shop, which we recommend. We look at the car and give you a written quote before we start.
