“Turbo Lab is an awesome place. I recently had my motor replaced by a different company. There were so many issues with the install. Constant leaks, bad communication, so I finally decided to take my car to Turbo Lab. …”
The engine is knocking. Or it's burning oil, blowing blue smoke, or the shop down the street said it has low compression and needs a new motor. That's a big bill, and it's hard to know if a rebuild, a used engine, or a new car makes the most sense.
Turbo Lab has rebuilt engines in Orem since 1999, from daily drivers to project cars. We tell you honestly whether a rebuild is worth it. If it is, we do it right, and you know the price before we start the work.
Does your engine need a rebuild?
An engine usually tells you before it quits. Watch for:
- A deep knock that gets louder as the engine revs
- Blue smoke from the tailpipe, or adding oil between changes
- Low compression on one or more cylinders
- Milky oil, or coolant disappearing with no leak you can see
- Low oil pressure, or the oil light flickering at idle
- The engine overheated badly and hasn't run right since
Rebuild, used engine, or repair?
Not every sick engine needs a rebuild. A blown head gasket or a bad timing belt can often be fixed with engine repair for much less. We test first so you don't pay for more than the engine needs.
When the bottom end is worn or damaged, you have three choices. A used engine costs less up front, but you don't know how it was treated. A factory remanufactured engine is a known quantity, but it's often the most expensive. A rebuild of your own engine lets us fix what's actually wrong and upgrade weak parts while it's apart. We'll price the options side by side.

Call the shopComplete Engine Rebuild
A complete engine rebuild means the engine comes out and comes all the way apart. We clean every part and measure it against the factory specs. The block, crank, and head get the machine work they need. We do light machine work on our own lathe. Most machining goes to a machine shop with CNC and precision equipment, since that work has to be exact.
Then we put it back together with new bearings, rings, gaskets, seals, and timing parts, torqued to spec. Before it goes back in the car, we check it again. After it's in, we run it, check for leaks, and walk you through break-in. Run conventional oil for 250 miles, then change the oil and filter with conventional again. After another 250 miles, change it to synthetic. Drive it gently through those 500 miles: vary the load, don't idle it for long, and stay off wide open throttle. Then it's ready for a full-power dyno tune.
Performance Engine Build
If the engine is coming apart anyway, it's the cheapest time to make it stronger. A performance engine build uses forged pistons, stronger rods, and better bearings to handle boost and high RPM. It's the right call if you plan to add a turbo, or if the engine failed because it was pushed past its limits. We build it and tune it on our own AWD Dynojet.
Towing, grades, and cold starts: engine wear in Orem
Engines work hard here. Towing up Provo Canyon, long grades on I-15, and cold winter starts all add wear. At 4,700 feet, engines also run with less air, which changes how they make power and heat.
We see a lot of Subarus, and their engines have well-known weak spots, like head gaskets on older EJ25 engines and piston and bearing failures on WRX and STI models.
Quoted after teardown, not before
You get a written quote after teardown, once we've seen what's actually wrong, not a guess before. Most times, you get photos of the damage we find. And your engine is built by a shop that also builds high-power engines and has a dyno to prove its work. Our work is covered by our warranty.
Recent engine rebuild work

A pair of Subarus got new short blocks: one had bearing damage from high oil temps, one had a hole in the block.
Blown STI engine replaced with a brand new RA block.
Focus RS: glitter in the oil, so the engine came out for a full teardown.

Engine rebuild questions
How much does an engine rebuild cost?
It depends on the engine, what failed, and the parts it needs. We quote it in writing after teardown, once we know what's inside.
How long does an engine rebuild take?
It depends on the parts and the machine shop. Machine work alone can take a few days. We give you a timeline with the written quote.
Is it better to rebuild my engine or buy a used one?
It depends on the car and what failed. A used engine costs less up front, but you don't know its history. A rebuild costs more but fixes what's wrong and tells you exactly what's inside. We price both so you can decide.
Will a rebuilt engine last as long as a new one?
A rebuild done to factory specs, with a proper break-in, can last as long as the original engine did. How you drive and maintain it matters most after that.
Do you rebuild Subaru engines?
Yes. Subaru engines are some of the most common rebuilds we see, from head gaskets to full rebuilds on WRX and STI engines.
Can you make my engine stronger while it's apart?
Yes. That's the cheapest time to do it. A performance engine build adds stronger parts for boost or high RPM.
