How it works: tell us what it's doing, we find the cause and quote it, and nothing starts until you say yes.
Your mileage is getting close to the timing belt interval in your owner's manual. Or you bought a used car and have no idea if it was ever done. That's worth finding out, because a timing belt usually gives no warning before it breaks.
Turbo Lab does timing belt replacement in Orem on cars, trucks, and SUVs. We replace the belt and the parts that wear with it, so the job is done once.
Why the timing belt matters
The timing belt keeps the top and bottom of your engine in step. On many engines, called interference engines, the valves and pistons share the same space at different times. If the belt snaps, they hit each other. That can bend valves and damage pistons, and a cheap belt job turns into engine repair or an engine rebuild.
Many makers call for a new belt somewhere between about 60,000 and 105,000 miles, or after a set number of years, whichever comes first. Your owner's manual has the exact number for your car.
Can you tell when a timing belt is going?
Most belts fail with no warning, so mileage is the best guide. Still, watch for:
- You're at or past the mileage or age in your owner's manual
- You don't know if it was ever done on a used car
- A ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
- An oil or coolant leak near the timing cover
- The engine won't start, or runs rough with a misfire

Call the shopTiming Belt Replacement
Getting to the timing belt takes a lot of labor. Once it's there, the parts around it are cheap to replace. So we replace the belt with the tensioner and idler pulleys. On most engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and we replace it too, since a leaking pump can ruin a new belt. We check the cam and crank seals for leaks while it's apart. We do timing chain service the same way.
Then we line up the timing marks exactly, turn the engine over by hand to check it, and start it up.
Timing belt or timing chain?
Some engines use a metal timing chain instead of a belt. Chains usually last much longer, but they can stretch over time and set off a check engine light or a rattle on cold starts. Not sure which one your car has? Call with the year, make, and model, and we'll tell you.
Why belts age faster in Orem's heat and cold
Utah's hot summers and cold winters age rubber, including belts. So does long idling in winter. That's why the years matter as much as the miles. A car that sits a lot can need a belt on age before it hits the mileage.
We see a lot of Subarus, Hondas, Toyotas, and other belt-driven engines.
The whole job the first time
We do the whole job the first time: the belt and the parts that wear out with it. You get a written quote first. And because we rebuild engines, we see what a missed timing belt costs. We'd rather help you avoid it. Our work is covered by our warranty.

Timing belt replacement questions
How much does timing belt replacement cost?
It depends a lot on the engine. Some belts are easy to reach, and some take hours to get to. We quote it in writing, with the water pump and idlers, before we start.
When should I replace my timing belt?
Follow the miles or years in your owner's manual, whichever comes first. Many cars fall between about 60,000 and 105,000 miles. If you don't know whether it was done on a used car, it's safest to do it.
What happens if my timing belt breaks?
The engine stops right away. On an interference engine, the valves can hit the pistons, which can mean major engine repair.
Should I replace the water pump too?
On most engines where the belt drives the pump, yes. The labor is already done, and a pump that leaks later can ruin the new belt.
Does my car have a timing belt or a chain?
It depends on the engine. Call with your year, make, and model and we'll tell you.
