How it works: tell us what it's doing, we find the cause and quote it, and nothing starts until you say yes.

You found the car. The price looks right, the seller seems nice, and it drove fine around the block. But a short test drive won't show a slow oil leak, worn brakes, or a transmission that slips once it's warm.

Turbo Lab does pre-purchase inspections in Orem on cars, trucks, and SUVs from private sellers and dealers. We look the car over, drive it, and tell you what it needs now, what can wait, and what it would cost to fix. Then you decide.

Not a Utah safety or emissions inspection

A pre-purchase inspection is a mechanic's look at a used car before you buy it. It isn't a Utah safety inspection or an emissions test. Those check a short list the state cares about, and we don't do them at the shop.

Our inspection is for you, the buyer. The question it answers is simple: what will this car need, and what will that cost?

What we check on a pre-purchase inspection in Orem

We go through the parts that cost the most to fix, and the problems sellers don't always mention:

  • Engine: how it starts, idles, and runs, plus noises, smoke, and signs of overheating
  • Transmission: how it shifts, cold and warm
  • Brakes: pads, rotors, and how the car stops
  • Suspension and steering: worn parts, clunks, and uneven tire wear
  • Leaks: oil, coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid
  • Rust underneath, from years of Utah County road salt
  • A code scan, even when the check engine light is off
  • A test drive on real roads, not just around the block

What you get

When we're done, we walk you through what we found, often with photos. We sort it into what needs fixing now, what's coming up soon, and what can wait. For each repair, we tell you what it would cost here.

Use that to negotiate the price, plan the repairs, or walk away. Plenty of good cars have a few problems. The point is to know about them before you pay. If we find a warning light, our check engine light diagnostics can find the cause.

Modified and performance cars

Tuned, swapped, or lifted? We work on builds every day, so we know what to look for under the parts: a tune that runs lean, cheap parts, or wiring done in a hurry. Tell us what the seller says was done, and we'll check it against what we see.

How to book with the seller

Ask the seller if you can bring the car to us before you buy. Most sellers who stand behind their car say yes. If one won't, that tells you something too.

Call or request a time online, and tell us the year, make, and model. The seller can drop the car off, or you can bring it in together. You don't have to wait here while we look. We text you updates and go over the results with you by phone or in person. After-hours drop-off works too.

That setup helps a lot of students at BYU and UVU, and parents shopping for them from out of town. You can buy with confidence even when you can't be there for every step.

Pre-purchase inspection questions

How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost?

It depends on the car. Call with the year, make, and model and we'll give you the price when you book.

How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?

It depends on the car and what we find. Call ahead and we'll set a time that works for you and the seller.

Does the seller need to come?

No. The seller can drop the car off, or you can bring it in together. Either way, we go over the results with you, the buyer.

Can you inspect performance or modified cars?

Yes. Builds are a big part of what we work on, so we know what to look for under the parts.

Is this the same as a Utah safety or emissions inspection?

No. We don't do state inspections or emissions testing. This is a mechanic's check of the car's condition before you buy it.

Can you inspect a car from a dealer?

Yes. Ask the dealer if you can bring the car in before you sign. We inspect it the same way.
