It's January, the engine is warm, and the vents still blow cold air. Or it's July on I-15, and the AC blows air that's barely cool. Neither one can wait long in Utah County.

Turbo Lab does heat and AC repair in Orem on cars, trucks, and SUVs. We find out why it's not working, tell you the price, and fix it before the next cold snap or heat wave. Utah County asks a lot of both systems: cold winter mornings, hot summer days, and road salt that eats at the parts up front. A car that sits in traffic on a hot afternoon works its AC the hardest.

When you need heat and AC repair

Bring it in if you notice:

  • Cold air from the vents with the heat on and the engine warm
  • Warm or weak air with the AC on
  • Air that only comes out of some vents, or one side is hot and one is cold
  • A sweet smell inside the car
  • A musty smell when you turn on the fan
  • Windows that fog up and won't clear, or a greasy film on the glass
  • A clicking sound behind the dash, or a loud noise when the AC kicks on

No heat: what we check

Your heater uses hot coolant from the engine. So when there's no heat, the problem is often in the cooling system. Low coolant is a common cause, and it means there's a leak somewhere. A thermostat stuck open keeps the engine from warming up, so the heat stays lukewarm. A clogged heater core can't pass enough hot coolant to warm the air.

Sometimes the heat is fine and the air just goes to the wrong place. A small motor behind the dash, called a blend door actuator, mixes hot and cold air. When it fails, you may hear clicking and get cold air on one side.

A sweet smell or greasy fog on the windows can mean the heater core is leaking coolant into the car. Get that checked soon. Coolant fumes aren't something to breathe, and a low coolant level can make the engine overheat.

Weak or warm AC: what we check

Most AC problems come down to refrigerant. The system is sealed, so if it's low, there's a leak. Just adding more is a short fix. We look for the leak first. The compressor is the pump that moves refrigerant, and it can wear out or stop turning on. The condenser sits at the front of the car and gets hit by rocks and road salt.

Older cars mostly use R-134a refrigerant. Most newer cars use R-1234yf. They aren't the same, and each needs its own equipment. Our AC machine is for R-134a. If your car uses R-1234yf, call first and we'll tell you what we can do. A musty smell is often an old cabin air filter or mold in the system, and that's a simple fix.

Heat and AC repair cost in Orem

The price depends on what failed and where it is. A simple AC leak, like an O-ring or a gasket, is usually $175 plus the refrigerant. A new compressor costs more. A thermostat or a cabin air filter costs far less than a heater core. Heater core prices vary the most: on some cars it's easy to reach, and on others the whole dash has to come out. We find the leak before we sell the fix

We find the leak or the failed part before we sell you a fix, so you're not back in a month. Cooling systems are familiar ground, because we build engines that make a lot of heat. And we've fixed cars on Center Street since 1999, for Orem drivers. Our work is covered by our warranty.

Heat and AC repair questions

Why is my car blowing cold air with the heat on?

The most common causes are low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a clogged heater core, or a failed blend door actuator. We test each one to find which it is.

What does a sweet smell inside my car mean?

It often means coolant is leaking, sometimes from the heater core. Get it checked soon, because low coolant can make the engine overheat.

Can you just recharge my AC?

We can, but if it's low, it has a leak. A recharge without fixing the leak won't last. We look for the leak first so the fix holds.

Why do my windows keep fogging up?

It can be a clogged cabin air filter, a blend door problem, or moisture from a heater core leak. A greasy film on the glass points to the heater core.

Do you work on newer cars with R-1234yf?

Our AC machine is for R-134a, which most older cars use. If your car uses R-1234yf, call first and we'll tell you what we can do.

How long does heat or AC repair take?

It depends on the part. A simple leak or a thermostat is a short job. A heater core can take much longer when the whole dash has to come out. We'll give you the time with the quote.
